Problem with Windows XP installation

  • ------------------------- Followup To Question - ------------------------- Followup To Question - Hi. I had a problem installing anything on my computer. Blue screen came out saying that there is a problem with a hall.dll. I found out that it could be a problem with a harddrive so I bought a new one. Bios recognizes it but the program to install the drive doesn't. When I tried to install Windows previously formatting the hard drive, again the blue screen showed up saying that there is a problem with hardware. RAM seems to be ok. It is also read by BIOS. What could be the problem? Thanks for your help. Answer - Hi Chris, You didn't tell me a thing about your system so I am shooting in the dark here. The `blue screen of death' is usually an indication of RAM problems.  Have you tried swapping out RAM boards. You do not need to do anything to a new hard drive in an XP system - especially formatting it.  The install software that comes with a herd drive is used to clone information from an old hard drive to the new one - but it seldom works whan you are using Win XP.  ALL YOU DO IS HOOK THE HARD DRIVE TO YOUR PRIMARY IDE CABLE, PUT YOUR XP CD IN THE CD DRIVE, AND TURN ON YOUR COMPUTER.  XP WILL START LOADING AND DO EVERYTHING NECESSARY TO CONFIGURE YOUR SYSTEM.   If I were you I would remove the partition from the new hard drive and start over.  To remove the partition you need a Win 98 SE `startup' floppy disk that has `fdisk' on it.  If this is getting too deep, just put the hard drive and Win XP CD in and see what happens.  If it gives you the choice of doing an NTFS format, do it. Karl. When I am installing Windows after while computer freezes and the blue screen of death shows up. You where talking about RAM problem. In Bios I can see the whole RAM reading 1GB, previously I have installed two of those but one burnt. After that only one DDR was working. Right now only blue screen shows. Do I have to put new RAM in my PC? Thank You for your help. Answer - Hi again Chris, The fact that you can see your RAM in your BIOS setup has nothing to do with how well it is working.  Also, I do not understand what you mean by you `burnt' a board.  If a board was fried somehow you may have also damaged the memory bank that it was installed in.  If you fried your memory bank then there is a good possibility that your whole motherboard is shot. Again, you still haven't told me a thing about youe system and I'm shooting in the dark. Karl. Thank you very much for help. I'm not really sure when You asking about system, You mean Windows XP or PC. Anyways my memory bank stopped working on the first  channel, it's visible by BIOS only on the third and forth slot. Is this a problem with motherboard? Thanks a lot. Chris.

  • Answer:

By info on your computer I mean how old is it, what brand ie it, what kind of processor do you have, how much ram do you have, what is the brand and size of your hard drive, are you usung Windows XP home or professional, etc. etc.  Also, how did your ram board get `burnt'?? Yes, I would guess your motherboard is your problem (or at least one of them).
