My puppy continues to have nightmares. He whines and howls and kicks loud enough in his sleep to wake us up 2-3 nights a week. And when I take him and comfort him he's sometimes shaking. most of the time he calms back down. what causes these dreams?

Answer:
They may not be nightmares, but Seizures. We've had 3 dogs (including the beagle we have now) that have done this. Our current dog is actually on Phenobarbital for seizures. Talk to your vet and see what he says, because it's very possible that Seizures could be the problem.
