How would life be without thermal energy?

Can cockroaches really live for over a week without their heads? How would they control their bodies? How would they sustain life without energy (from eating)?

  • Answer:

The week or so sounds about right. The insect "brain" is scattered somewhat throughout the body with coordination of body segments operating from the central brain located in the head. Early experiments involved sealing the "neck" with wax to reduce dehydration and prolong life.

I am not sure about the first part, but the answer to the second is that that is what they eventually die from (starvation).
