Is there a better material for earring protective sleeves used against nickel allergies?

Does 24k gold have nickel in it? I have terrible nickel allergies but usually am ok with high quality gold. I just got married and my new, very high quality 24k ring is causing a bad reaction. Could it be nickel?

  • Answer:

I doubt if your ring is 24k gold. It would be too soft. It would scratch easily and wear very quickly. Most gold jewelry will state somewhere on it what carat it is. It will be very small. If you cannot find the marking, then your ring is not gold. That would explain the reaction.

24K gold is the purest form of gold in jewelry - and unless you are allergic to yellow gold, which is very rare, i'd say your ring is an alloy of gold and something else, like nickel. white gold contains nickel. check with the person who sold the ring to make sure it is pure gold.

Yes traces in it. I know that titanium and stainless steel do not as I am allergic to nickel, it causes eczema aroung my ring finger because my wedding band is gold.

Like others have said, it's not going to be 24k gold-- you could scratch that with a fingernail if you tried hard enough. It may be plated in 24k gold and an alloy underneath, or if it's "white gold" then it's plated with something.

Some people can have alergic reactions to high Karat gold. 24K is the purest form of gold available (99.9999% pure).

It's quite possible the gold itself is causing a reaction. Quite a few people have a reaction to yellow gold, so they have rings that are white gold or platinum instead :)

Unfortunately, http://www.appealingweddingbands.com does not exist. I would recommend you to buy highest karat that you can buy and you should pay attention your daily use. You’ll need to be extra conscientious about keeping your ring clean. It’s common for soap and lotion residue to stick to your ring, which can irritate your sensitive skin. It’s also common for the area of your finger under your ring to never get fully dry after washing your hands, which can also lead to irritation. You might want to consider taking your ring off at night when you sleep, as well as when you shower or wash your hands. Clean your ring on a regular basis with a store-bought jewelry cleaner. You might consider purchasing an 18-karat gold ring (rather than 14-karat) or having your ring plated with rhodium. This could prevent allergic reactions in the first place.

It could, pure gold is very soft, which is why they add nickel to it. Jewelry cannot be made from pure gold and stand up to everyday wear. I have similar problems, my wedding band is tungsten (looks like silver, but no tarnish).

I'm not a doctor but I don't think pure gold can cause a reaction in anyone. Gold is a noble metal, among the most non-reactive, non-allergenic elements.

http://www.appealingweddingbands.com can cause a negative reaction in some people, and it can happen as soon as you get a new ring, or even after you’ve been wearing the ring for years without any problem. You may notice that the skin on your finger under your ring has become red and itchy. This can happen because you are allergic to the nickel in the gold in your ring (and you can become allergic at any time – your body chemistry changes as you age, which is why it’s possible to develop allergies later in life). There are a few things you can do to try to solve this problem. First, paint the inside of your http://www.appealingweddingbands.com with clear nail polish. Be sure to let it dry before putting it back on your finger. If that doesn’t work, you may want to consider having your ring rhodium or platinum plated. You can talk to your jeweler about having this done. Typically, you will need to have it plated every two to four years. It is also possible that your problem is not an allergy, but that your wedding ring needs to be cleaned. If you wear your ring all day, every day, the skin underneath it doesn’t get a chance to “breathe.” Every time you wash or put lotion on your hands, traces of soap or hand cream can get stuck under your ring and cause irritation. Remove your ring and wash it (you can also talk to your jeweler about a cleaning solution to dip your ring in), and then dry it thoroughly. Stop wearing your ring for several days until your finger is healed. Once your finger is back to normal, start wearing your ring again, and in the future take special care to dry the spot under the ring after washing your hands, using lotion, etc.
