How safe is Pittsburgh as a city?

Last week the WSJ published an article "Kodak Didn't Kill Rochester. It was the other way Around" How does Pittsburgh compare.  Is Pittsburgh a city that works for or against a growing business?

  • There was an article in the last week about Rochester and Kodak - "Kodak Didn't Kill Rochester. It Was the Other Way Around"http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204124204577153053662634584.html  Are there businesses in Pittsburgh that have suffered a similar fate?

  • Answer:

Neither is true. Kodak did not kill Rochester and Rochester did not kill Kodak. Horrible management choices, made over a very long time, doomed Kodak. In fact, were Kodak not so technologically strong, it would have died sooner, given the plethora of absolutely unimaginably breathtakingly boneheaded decisions made by its management.

Pretty sure Kodak killed Rochester...polluted it, used it up and left it for dead on the side of the road. Kodak's location & geography had nothing to do with its' leaders' decisions to not look to the future and appropriately invest in digital technology.

Nobody killed Kodak but Kodak.  I happened to actually be working in the Software Engineering group at Kodak back in 1996 when the first digital camera arrived. The derision and short-sightedness at what would eventually take down the entire company (and part of the vitality of Rochester) was incredibly obvious.  I remember taking the QuickTake 100 around Elmgrove taking pictures for department websites and I actually said things along the lines of "if you're all not fast on your feet this will put the entire company out of a job in 10 years."  And lo, that would happen.  My father had worked for Kodak for over 20 years when he got laid off in the '90s (he worked in Film Sensitizing Division actually coating 35mm film in production) and he said on a couple of occasions:  "The day they lay off people from this division is the day there's a for sale sign outside of Kodak Park."  Hubris.
