Has anyone noticed a deterioration in Bluehost's hosting over the past month or two?

  • I've been having major problems and have decided to move my hosting. The two major areas of concern are too much downtime, and slow page loading speed. A new area of concern from today is that one new hosting company has told me that my email – posted at Bluehost – is not receiving any mails from them; they are bouncing back. Downtime I have been monitoring this for a couple of weeks now and have pasted below the last weekly summary from Monitis. This shows uptime around the world ranging from 91.3% to 97.1% against a claimed uptime of 99.9% guarantee. There is a screenshot at the bottom of the page. Page Load time Home page load time over the same period has ranged from 8.35 seconds (Jan 13th) to 23.7 seconds (January 7). Terrible! Bluehost's Response Bluehost's response to the slow page load was to tell me that my site had been 'throttled'  automatically for reasons that were not entirely apparent to the support assistant. However, he did tell me three or four places to check for problems (in cPanel) which were producing a red flag for Bluehost, which prompted them to throttle my site. These included malfunctioning plug-ins, and database errors. However, before taking the time to troubleshoot these error reports, I had decided to move away from Bluehost. My site Mine is a smallish WordPress site – 250 pages indexed by Google – with a small number of visitors – 50 to 60 on a good day. So, on the face of it, you wouldn't think it would be too difficult to serve these pages fairly quickly. My research My decision to leave Bluehost, rather than battle through the error logs and troubleshoot is a result of reading that a massive company called EIG has been hoovering up hosting companies left right and centre and now has about 60 of them. The highest profile takeover was that of Hostgator over a year ago. According to popular opinion in the hosting world (eg see http://digitalfaq.comor http://webhostingtalk.com/) the model of Hostgator, Bluehost, Just Host and others is twofold. Firstly, they pay huge commissions to affiliates (who are either ignorant, or don't have their customers' best interests at heart – let's call them greedy) so they can get loads punters in: then secondly they shoehorn as many punters as possible onto one server, which is underpowered for the job. They typically offer: "Unlimited bandwidth", which really means: "Unlimited bandwidth as long as you don't use too much". If you do use too much, they will "throttle" you if they are Bluehost, or take other action if they are Hostgator, Just Host, etc. Is this lying? There is a case for it. I can't think of a defence as far as Bluehost is concerned. Throttling customers' sites without any warning is not 'unlimited bandwidth', is it?. Any comments? What does anyone else think about their hosting with Bluehost, Hostgator, Just Host or any other EIG company? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endurance_International_Group RESOURCES Hosting This looks to me like an unbiased review of good hosting companies: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/web-hosting/5089-top-web-hosts.html Check site performance Monitis: 15 days free site monitoring http://tryfree.monitis.com/monitis?adv=23382&loc=1&gclid=CIPegvLNoLwCFQkFwwodCDsAwg GTmetrix: Check site speed, combining Yslow and Page Speed services: http://gtmetrix.com/ EIG(Endurance International Group) owns… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endurance_International_Group Hoping and expecting that Quora supports free speech and fair comment better than Warrior Forum does, I look forward to hearing anyone's comments and thoughts, and hearing of anyone's personal experiences with hosting. IT experts as well as average users have various complaints over Bluehost, ranging from bad to worst type of web hosting service. The server is consistently slow  and significantly goes down on weekends – hurting businesses.  Particularly their cPanel, customers complain  often times that it's always down for more than an hour. They also get unexplained outages and site response times are decelerating. All in all, Bluehost appears to be very functional, as advertised for the most part, yet we often hear minor complaints such as the one mentioned. If problems do persist with their service, you can try to contact their customer support. Their live chat representatives are helpful. The issues you might face may be isolated, and not experienced by everyone. A great alternative to Bluehost is ASO, because they got 24/7 livechat and great servers with almost no downtime. I been using them for a while and i love them. Here is a review and 30% OFF - it comes down to around $2 per month for the smallest plan: http://www.lowhosting.com/a-small-orange-review/

YES! I moved my entire business, and partnered with Liquid Web. Love the servers we use. http://www.shawktech.com

Yes, I can confirm Bluehost is my worst hosting provider and after just paying my renewing I saw they had a 20% price increase and I almost pay double since I signed up three years ago. And they have this full backup issue for something like half a year now which they can't seem to solve. So I'll give them a chance by sending an e-mail, but if nothing changes I will certainly move out a.s.a.p. Unfortunately I can't manage that within three days.
