What did Galois discover about finite groups of Lie type?
-
Refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_of_Lie_type for definitions of these groups. It is likely that Galois did work on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_groups which Jordan extended later.
-
Answer:
I don't believe that he made any contributions to Lie groups, considering that he died in 1832, and Sophus Lie, who laid the foundations of the theory of Lie Groups, was only born in 1842.
