Is my GPA public or private information?

Is 2.0 GPA in Computer Information Systems terrible for the job market?

  • I am graduating with a 2.0 gpa and I wonder how much does it matter when I will be applying for the jobs? I didn't party through the college, I just had to work and I guess it showed on my grades. But I was also active in college clubs and was on a debate team.

Admittedly, it might be a bit difficult to land your "ideal" job right after college. Unfortunately GPA is pretty important when starting out just in terms of your resume being noticed. I think if you worked full or part-time while attending school and being involved in extracurriculars can help. Make sure to indicate on your resume how many hrs/wk you worked while juggling a full course load. Again, you might not start at the spot you've always envisioned. This by no means indicates your future career success. If you work hard and are a wonderful team member, that will go a long way for long-term success. Good luck!

I've never been asked my GPA as an employee. I've never asked it as an employer. I don't care. GPA is a cap measure because I don't know all the curriculums. Is an MIT 3.0 as good as a Cornell 3.2 ? Naw, I can figure out if you know enough to function or not asking you interview questions. Anyone who says you need a high GPA to get a job is ignorant, a business intelligence person (they're boring anyway), or a total corporate schill. Leave it off the resume and apps unless specifically asked for it. Even if they do, leave it off until they ask in an interview. They never will. It will be even less relevant after you have a few work experiences on there too. I graduated with a 2.38, and have gotten startup funding, jobs at fortune 100 companies, and some pretty shibby consulting gigs and nobody has ever asked, or cared if I told them once they saw me in action. And I am about the worst networked human ever. I will caveat, that if you worked hard and barely got that grade, you might have chosen the wrong field. But if, like me, liberal arts or curriculum mortis got you, you're fine.

What matters is what you know and how you apply it. It also helps if you made good networking connections and showed excellence in your field while you were there. You may need to start with a smaller company and work your way up in the industry, but with hard work and good references, that 2.0 GPA can be quickly forgotten.

I have been in the field professionally for 8 years and have never been asked to disclose my GPA. No point in putting it on your resume. Get your foot in the door somewhere. Experience is equally important.

I work in the same field as you and there has not been a single instance when my GPA was asked. The only time I needed to show my GPA was to get into graduate school for my Master's. I often think about how much of a big deal GPA was made in college. I guess for you to be more serious and pursue further academically. However, I have heard from some of my friends from Deloitte and McKinsey that they do inquire about your GPA.
