What are the major registry companies (e.g. Verisign, Neustar) providing back end services for companies wishing to apply to ICANN for TLD domains? Are there reasons to choose one over another?

Answer:
Stevan is correct. Those are the 3 companies with the most experience. Neustar operates the technical infrastructure for .BIZ, .US, .TEL, .CO (I'm the CEO of .CO) and a few others. They've done a fantastic job supporting our domain extension. We recently achieved 1 million registrations (in less than a year) without a single hiccup in the process. Based in Sterling, VA. Verisign runs .COM, .NET and few others. Obviously a very large/ reliable company with plenty of experience. It's the 800 lb gorilla. Good company also based in Sterling, VA. Affilias operates .ORG, .INFO, the new .XXX, and a bunch of ccTLDs. Also a good company based in Ireland, but most of their activities are in the US. In my opinion, it comes down the affinity you have to working with their respective teams and the value added services that each may offer. From a technical standpoint, you won't find big differences between any of the three that would be relevant in operating a new TLD.

Verisign, Affilias, & Neustar though there a lot of other companies that are not so major also offering the service. You have to be careful that the service has the experience so their back end works well with the other registrars and the more relationships they have with registrars the better as that is your sales channel.

Do you want to sell domain names or are you registering a TLD for in-house use? In the later case I would consider hiring a smaller hand. There are plenty of companies (even some TLD operators) who offer this kind of service. And you might find their price tag more appealing.
