Why do schools have such stupid dress codes?
-
to me my dress code is stupid. I don't mean wearing uniforms, at my school you can wear anything that fits into a certain dress code. But it's ridiculous. The boys don't have a dress code, just the girls. We can't show our shoulders, we can't wear leggings, a bunch of other rules. If you don't follow the code, you usually get sent home for the day. That's like telling us that what we wear is more important then our education. They claim that the dress code is so boys don't get distracted. How about instead of teaching us how to dress, they teach those boys respect respect towards girls.

Answer:
You have some very good points. Given some of the wild and provocative teen (boy and girl) styles out there, I can understand why the school would want some limitations in place. School is for paying attention to teachers and learning, not for watching a fashion catwalk. However, you make a great point about the reason given: "Not distracting the boys" is a ridiculous transference of responsibility. Boys should be held responsible for their OWN lack of focus -- you are quite right! "But that girl over there has great legs" is not a valid excuse for ignoring the teacher, under any circumstances. As you said: It IS unfair and ridiculous that only girls are held accountable to a dress code. If there are going to be limitations at all, then Boys should have them, too. This seems like a good thing for you to take to your student council for discussion about changes -- I hope your school has one? If not, perhaps you could propose the creation of a student council. Councils are a great way to exercise a link between student needs and opinions and the authority of the faculty and school policy. Go forth and act on your grievances! Good luck! :-D

You make a bit of a valid point. However, while I am waiting for the high school students to walk through the intersection to the school, I usually wonder where their individual respect is? I went to school a long time ago. We could wear jeans and a nice shirt and tennis or hard shoes. We were not allowed to wear bedroom slippers or beach flipflops, tees shirts and shorts even though it was in California. Guys had to wear long pants. In my opinion they enforced a dress code only to prevent outrageous attire; anything that was totally different than the rest of the students. We didn't have so much drama and rebellion against reasonable rules. You have 4 years in high school to prepare to be an adult and to have some decent job prospects. Worrying about the dress code shouldn't ever be a problem.

Well, there's no definite answer for your situation, but I'm a guy and I totally agree with your situation. If your school has a dress code for the girls, they should have one for the boys too. Maybe that will fix the sagging pants problem :)

Dress codes are meant to enforce decency and self respect, aside from the fact that no one wants to see someone you-know-what when walking through the hall

It's not like they're trying to strip you of your rights, they just ask that you have some decency. You'll understand eventually.

You seem to forget that guys usually can't wear tank tops that have large arm holes in the sides, can't sag pants, etc. The code applies to both sexes.

Hello? I'm MudFeather and that is terrible! I believe you should wear what you want, where you want and when you want. FREEDOM!!!!!! As long as you don't look like a slut you're fine. I know how to fix this. First, gather some people who think this bad. Second, protest and make some signs saying FREEDOM and blah blah blah. Next,PROTEST NEAR THE BOSS'S OFFICE. And then, talk with boss and try to find a decision to your problem. And lastly,Never give up!!!

At my School we have to wear uniforms

its isnt right if one has a dress code then everyone should have one but the reason is that guys would get distracted staring at girls, and they tend to be in the mood because a girl dresses with a short skirt or tight clothing

Uniforms are much easier. But that's ridiculous because boys are gonna look at girls no matter what they wear.
