What friendships will show in my friends' Facebook ticker?
-
On Facebook, my friends' list is set to completely private ("only me"). This should mean that when I friend someone with a private / friends-only friends list, the new friendship should NOT show up in my friends' tickers unless they already know that person. However, what if I add someone with a public friends' list - will it show up in my other friends' tickers despite my privacy settings? I know (and don't care) that they can see the friendship by viewing the profile of the person with a public friends list, I just don't want it to show in ticker. I've googled a lot but haven't found this explicitly answered, and don't have two profiles I can play with.

Answer:
From the privacy setting dialog for the friend lists:Who can see your friend list? Remember: Your friends control who can see their friendships on their own timelines. If people can see your friendship on another timeline, they'll be able to see it in news feed, search and other places on Facebook. They'll also be able to see mutual friends on your timeline.I would say "If people can see your friendship on another timeline" covers a public friend list, and the new relationship is able to show up on the news feed. Can you explain where you've heard hiding items from the Activity Log wouldn't fix this for you? It's not the most convenient, of course, but the literally all you can do on with a new friend item in the Activity Log is allow, highlight, or hide items from your timeline. I'm comfortable trusting that as much as anything else on Facebook.

If you're comfortable with it, memail me a link to your profile I'd be happy to check for you. I've got nothing better to do right now.

If it shows in the ticker and you want it gone, go to the Activity Log, and hide it from the timeline.

@phunniemee Thanks, but I can view my profile as public already, specifically wondering about the ticker activity seen by my friends. @deezil I've heard this is not true (but I do it anyway).

Thanks, but I can view my profile as public already, specifically wondering about the ticker activity seen by my friends. Oh, my bad. The way I read what you were asking is if, when you go to someone's profile and click their "friends" section, your picture would show up. Which I have no idea about.

http://www.metafilter.com/user/119185 That is helpful, thanks! That does make me assume that the new friendship will be actively displayed to my friends. To answer your question, I was most concerned about the ticker on the right side, which instantaneously shows information, rather than Activity Log, which I can manage. I haven't found it stated officially, but found reports https://www.facebook.com/help/community/question/?id=4625475436050 that indicate that removing something from the Timeline / Activity Report does not remove it from the ticker.
