Country : India Lucky number : 7 There is something magical about this number. There are 7 wonders in the world, 7 colors in a rainbow, 7 notes in music etc. These could be the reasons for many people considering it lucky. Unlucky number : 8 There is a theory about this number in numerology. Just like the curves used to make a shape of "eight", there are highs and lows associated with this number. So if a person with a 8 as his birth date, has a very good phase going on, is very likely to face sudden hardships/lows and vice versa. Also other numbers like 26, 17 which many people consider unlucky add up to this number. This being said, my birthday falls on 8th of October (1 am). So I still wonder, what different fate would I have had, had I been born an hour earlier :p Thanks for the A2A :)

Country: India Unlucky No. :   Theory behind: This number is feared by many Indians, who believe that it has evil effects like poverty, accidents and death, and what not. There is no doubt that number 8 is believed to be an interesting, or say, a controversial single digit number in the world of Astrology and Numerology as well, and not just in Indian culture. Saturn rules the number 8 in Indian numerology. It is generally believed that India is ruled by this number. India became independent on 15-8-1947 which adds up to 35, which adds up to 8. On that day the star was Pushyami – the 8th Star. The Gujarat earthquake in India was dated 26.01.2001. The Tsunami of 26.12.2004 made it worse for those who already feared number 8. The Kashmir Earthquake which happened on 08.10.2005, Killed about 80,000 people. The terror strike on Mumbai hotel happened on 26.11.2008. No.8 is associated with Saturn as per Numerology. The 3 stars of Saturn (called Sani in Hindi) which are Pushyami, Anuradha and Uttarabhadra happen to be the 8th, 17th & 26th star respectively counting from the 1st star which is Aswini. The numbers 17 and 26 add up to 8. Sani is also considered relation breaker, peace-breaker & lethargic kind of personality. People are afraid of Shani because it is shani which brings sorrow, pains, miseries and losses. Saturn (Sani) is cold and dry, tamasik (lethargic) and an elderly planet. His sight is bad, and he is said to be "malefic amongst the malefics." Saturn destroys the house it occupies (except if positioned in the seventh house, where it receives directional strength) and any houses it aspects or any planet it conjoins or aspects.

This answer is specific to 'Sanatan' religion a.k.a Hindus. Whenever we offer money to any 'Sage', 'Pundit', or any deity for that matter, we make sure the amount doesn't end with '0', and let it preferably be ending by '1'. It is a 'Shagun'(good blessing) if the number ends with 1. So whenever even we are gifting people and relatives on occasions such as marriages, house warming, or something like that, we tend to take amount in the likes of  11, 21, 51, 101, 501 or 1001. You'll be amazed to know that this practice has taken up so well that some SME businesses run on this. You see an envelope ad below: This is a 'Shagun envelope that comes with a one rupee coin attached to it. People just need to put certain amount in round figure, and give it off. The cost price of this envelope would hardly be 2-2.5 rupees but it is sold at 6!!!! See the margin!!! People earn of society's beliefs and practices.

8 in China is lucky. For some Indians it's 9 whereas 8 is unlucky. 9 is considered lucky & 8 converse is because any number multiplied by 9 and the digit of the product added together equals 9. With 8, the digits of the product added keeps reducing when the number it is multiplied by keeps ascending. For example, 8 x 1=8, 8 x 2=16 (1+6=7)

26 11 are numbers that remind Indians of a tragedy- the attacks on Mumbai in 2008 by members of Lashkar-e-Taiba. There were 12 coordinated bombing and shooting incidents across four days.
