  How old are you? If you are only 5'4" because you are young then look at some 80 or 100 cc models. They have plenty of power for a young guy (light person, not a heavy adult) on dirt and they are cheaper than larger bikes (I'm assuming that you mean you have only 500 quid to spend). Everything is a fast bike when you are starting so don't worry about it not being fast, dirt doesn't require as much power as street riding, much more important is size and weight, you can go quicker on a lighter bike. With a budget of 500 pounds you might end up with a model with no electric start so size is important just to be able to kick start it. Anything with a number between 70 and 100 in the title won't be too tall for a 5'4" rider. Probably also better to stick to 4 strokes because they are more reliable and cheaper to run than 2 strokes. My suggestions would be a Honda CRF100F or CRF80F, or Suzuki DR-Z70 or DR-Z125, Yamaha TT-R110E or TT-R90E, there are HEAPS to choose from and they're all good bikes. Go and try some on for size and make sure you take a crusty old dude who knows bikes with you if you want to buy off a private seller. If you don't you might end up buying something that looks ok but you end up fixing it more often than riding it.
