Most drilling is done with a water clay mixture to which other additives can be mixed depending on the specific needs of the well being drilled. The primary additive is barite which is used to adjust the weight per unit volume of the drilling fluid. Some wells are drilled using an oil based mud but the most common alternative to a water based mud is the use of air.
