Are porsche 944 good first cars?

  • Answer:

If I were you, I would set my sights lower for a first car and become accustomed to the importance of vigilance for regular, routine, vehicle maintenance and upkeep. When allowed to "go to seed", Porsches can become financially burdensome. And yes, for what it is, the 944 is a great car. Handling is exceptional.

Actually, a 944 is a very nice car to own, drive and work on. The engine is a simple single overhead cam 4 cylinder, and the timing belt is easy to do. Suspension, brakes, etc., are all very easy and straight forward. The brake calipers actually are from a VW van. But the transaxle and torquetube a little tricky. The drive shaft runs as engine speeds, and the clutch is in the back. The torque tube bearing then do go bad somewhat frequently, and you have to drop the transaxle to pull the torque tube out to do them.

Reviews show the 944 to be a lot of fun to drive. Unfortunately they are also rather high maintenance which means expensive. Insurance will also be pretty high especially at your age, so how much money do you want to spend? If you could afford it this car would be a blast to own and drive.

Your dad is right on not buying that car. You have actually picked what might the absolute worst car for a first time diver. I can understand the idea of being creative and doing something different. If I had more money and some hobby time I would like to own an older porsche. Again not being negative, just factual. That car was last produced in 1991, so you are looking at car at least 23 years old. What are some facts. High insurance costs, that is considered a premium sports car. Safety features like ABS, crash design, and air bags. 20 year old technology. Repairs. Expensive hard to find parts, and you will need a specialty shop to work on the car, they are expensive and busy so basic repairs can take a week. Lets put on the practical hat. Part of being a new driver is showing ability to make good decisions. So go back to the drawing board and look at some other options. You don't say your budget, but what about and impreza? http://cleveland.craigslist.org/cto/4468143657.html Or a jetta? http://cleveland.craigslist.org/cto/4476166453.html Best of luck.
