Who is a technical recruiter?

What self-improvements will you recommend for a non-technical technical recruiter?

  • This question is an off-shoot from the question: This question is different from that question because most answers in that question discounts the possibility that a technical recruiter with non-technical backgrounds could self-improve on technical knowledge, or on the ability to understand and evaluate technical candidates.

  • Answer:

The biggest thing that helped me (I received my degree in English) was completing immersing myself in tech tech industry. That includes asking a lot of questions to your candidates, not just the typical "have you done this" "Can you do this", but change that to "can you explain to me what ___ does" or "How is ____ different from ___". On top of that I go to meetups on a regular basis. Some of them are language/technology specific. While I'm there, I focus not just on the networking side, but also on listening to the speakers talk and taking notes. Other meetups are just more techn industry specific in general, just being in the same room with technical people and talking with them will help you so much. It's the biggest thing I stress to my new recruiters.

When I started recruiting the most I knew about computers were Word and Legend of Zelda.  I learned technology by talking with IT people and learning from them.  People, especially in IT and engineering, love talking about what they do. I took endless notes and learned from candidates and people that my company had placed.
