When is Shanghai good to visit?

What is the one single thing all tourists should do when they visit Shanghai?

  • There are clearly an endless variety of things for tourists to do in a city like Shanghai, but in your opinion, what is one single thing every tourist should experience when they visit Shanghai?

  • Answer:

Take the subway up to Jiading right at the end of line 11. You'll find a Suzhou-esque garden (for a third of the price), a Pagoda (that you can climb), a Confucious Temple (converted into a museum about official's examinations from the past), and some old streets with small shops and street snacks. It's also miles away from the city centre and, although it's a little touristy, still makes for a good break from the modern side of Shanghai and much more conveniently so than a trip to Suzhou.   Oh, and avoid Yuyuan. And the Jade Buddha Temple. And Jing An Temple.

Take the subway and get off at Nanking East Road, and work your way over to Wuming Road 吴明路, where many small restaurants are. Among them, you should find any Shanghai restaurant food which offers fried meat dumplings or 生煎包 Right next door to it is a famous Shanghai restaurant and landmark called Wangjiasha 王家沙, which is state-owned and has terrible service, but really delicious food. If you go in October, it is famous for its steamed Yangchen crabs which come from Tai Lake. Another famous dish is its fried eel dish 鳝糊

To really experience and understand Shanghai, I would recommend that the tourist visit not only China's history, but also that of Shanghai's. The reason for this is that the city's reputation as and its physical appearance of a booming economic center will make more sense within the context of a seemingly indiscernible cultural scene. A couple books worth recommending to provide that big picture may include Richard McGregor's The Party: The Secret World of China's Communist Rulers and Ezra V. Vogel's Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China. I would recommend walking around--not so much taking taxis and metros--in Lujiazui, Jingan District, and on the Bund. Traveling west by metro to Hongqiao is a good idea too, to see a different urban landscape. Ask around for some of the town's more famous restaurants that well-to-do locals frequent, and partake in some of Shanghai's nightlife. Online resources to check out include http://www.dianping.com,http://www.smartshanghai.com, and http://www.timeoutshanghai.com Lastly, have some bespoke tailoring done at one of Shanghai's fabric markets. If a recommendation is needed, feel free to PM me.

Visit the Chinese Propaganda museum. Hidden away in the basement of a residential compound on Huashan lu it's a little difficult to find, but is well worth the visit.
