    Do you boot up laptop on battery or it is connected to AC/DC adapter? Because when I turn off my laptop by holding power button, if it is connected with adapter, it won't boot to windows, so I must power it up on battery. I don't really know why is it doing that but it works so I didn't investigate further more. And did you try to remove and put back battery? (maybe stupid question...)

Sounds like the hard drive has failed. Regardless if it shows up in the BIOS or not, it may not be working properly (head crash), and cannot read any sectors.

''I have a Win7 install/repair disk and can boot to it only when my hard drive is removed.'' You just sead what is problem.Try hard disk in someones laptop,or try to download Hirens boot cd and check your hard disk.Meybe hard disk have bad sectors on the surfice, that make you problems.
