Answer:
What colleges look for in extra-curriculars: * How you've made a meaningful contribution to something * What your non-academic interests are * Whether you can maintain a long-term commitment * Whether you can manage your time and priorities * What diversity you'd bring to the student body Work experience—paid or volunteer, year-round or summer—can help you identify career interests and goals, gain work experience, and apply classroom learning to the real world. You can also gain skills and experience through volunteer work, such as by tutoring elementary school kids or spending time at a local hospital. Some things you can do are: National Science bowl, Science Olympiad, MathCounts, National Mock Election http://www.nationalmockelection.org/ , Scripps National Spelling Bee http://www.spellingbee.com/ , National Academic Quiz Tournaments http://www.naqt.com/ , Odyssey of the Mind http://www.odysseyofthemind.com/ There are so many depending on what you are good at. Don't forget your church! There are tons of ways to give to your community there. Also your library may be the way to go if you want to do a story hour or event.

Yes, check with your online school to see what courses they offer. If they don't offer AP or honors courses-consider teaching yourself and studying for the AP exam. Another thing you can do is take a class at your community college. This will look great on your transcript. Colleges will not penalize you for not taking AP classes if they were not offered by your high school. Best of Luck! Jana http://www.purehomeschooling.com/

You can definitely do extracurricular activities: club sports, volunteering, community theatre, dancing, anything your local area offers really. You can take AP exams without taking the course, but I would get in contact with a teacher at a nearby high school to give you some tips on how to prepare as well as buy a prep book from your local bookstore. You should also try to get an internship if you can, these look really good on applications, especially for someone who isn't in college yet.
