Do you need math to be a programmer?

If I was going to teach myself to be a computer programmer, what would be a detailed hypothetical syllabus of the math I would need before attempting an independent program such as MIT OpenCourseWare?

  • If at all possible, please be specific (instead of just saying "trigonometry" or "pre-calculus").

  • Answer:

You need to know almost no math to do quite a bit of programming, and much of what is helpful you only really pick up as you need it (outside of a few important exceptions, like graphics or CS theory). Just start learning the CS and stop to fill in the math holes as you need to.

Other answers

You don't need to know much math to be a programmer, unless you're doing 3D or game programming or going into finance. Basic Calculus and discrete mathematics will do.
