Occupational Therapy jobs, new graduate question?

  • I am thinking of working in either in a school setting or a skilled nursing facility. Which one do you believe is better. If there is another facility that is good for new graduates, ...show more

  • Answer:

I agree with Lala that you should figure out if you enjoy working more with kids or adults, as that will pretty much guide your decision. But I don't recommend getting 2 part time jobs or PRN jobs to start as a new grad; you need mentorship and a steady job a the same position in order to build confidence and learn your job and role as an OT, and jumping back and forth between different jobs, even if they are the same "type" of job, is asking for disaster. Save that for when you are more confident of your skills.

If i had to choose between those 2, i would choose a skilled nursing facility. The reason is that you take the child out of the environment it normally is, and in that way it is easier to teach them something. (i have a autistic son and he works alot better in the nursing facility than in the school where he easily gets distracted). It is a better place i believe to work with them in a 'controlled environment' with minimal distractions. That means for you as you are learning, it is also easier for you. Perhaps when you get more experience, you could also work in a school setting. Hth.
