Now, this may have changed, but when I was in Europe, there was NO Youth Hostel in Paris, and the only one even remotely nearby was near Versailles. Anything else was, well, not considered even a commute. I staid in a little pension on Blvd St. Michel. Not terribly pricey, but then again, it was many years ago. Quartier Latin is nice for students and young people. (and the young at heart, too, I'm sure.)
