Can I use universal remote on an old analogue tv?

Do LCD TVs really use 3 times the power of your old analogue TV?

  • My ex-husband says they do (he's a butcher). My uncle says they don't but plasmas might (he's an electrician).

  • Answer:

That back plate on the TV is the Max power it takes. Like the first 3 seconds the tv turns on. I have tested my 29" CRT HDTV with a wattage meter and it reads between 110 and 145 watts depending on how much white is on the screen (the electron guns turn off to produce black). My brothers 32" Polaroid LCD TV used up 145 watts continuously since the backlight is always on full power. As for smaller CRTs, I think my 21" monitor is about 95 - 110 watts(higher scan rates of computers use more power than HDTV rates) and my 17" crt was about 65 watts. Nothing like the numbers they use to convince you to buy LCDs.

No Way, they use a lot less.

Typically, the power consumptions are: 32" CRT television - 400 watts. 37" LCD television - 200 watts. 37" plasma television - 250 watts. So to answer your question, no, they don't. It is quite simple to verify the figures - just look at the back panel on the TV and it will tell you how much power it uses.

I'll add to pleasemailme888's list, I also have that wonderful Kill-A-Watt gadget and used it on a friend's 50-some-inch plasma -- the power consumption on those varies quite a lot, depending on the overall brightness setting and program material, I believe it was like 150 to 300+ watts range. You can really save a substantial amount keeping the screen at low brightness in a darkened room. That of course won't work as well for having the gang over for afternoon football games; my friend has a tip jar for that mode (oh, just kidding, Ray).

Well, when it comes to monitors, LCD uses significantly less power than old CRT monitors. It's the same technology when converted to the larger scale television sets in both cases, so I would posit that the same holds true. That LCD's are much more power efficient. edit: oh, and plasma definitely uses more power than LCD, that I know for a fact

Im stuck in your brain

there may be something about them that uses more electricity, but it certainly isnt the liquid crystal display. it takes almost no power at all to activate liquid crystal.

LCD's use less power then an CRT, but plasma tv's use heaps more power then a crt, the are the most power hungry tv's you can get
