What to do in Philly for a day?

What would be a great one day tour of Philly?

  • Goal: Get the flavor of Philly and have fun and great food. Avoid: Expense and running around breathless Guidelines: Pick several sites and restaurants. Tourist sites are not a high priority.

  • Answer:

Right now, the cherry trees are blooming, and it's an incredibly beautiful walk from the Art museum down along boathouse row and the park along the Schuykill river. You could spend several hours doing that. Start in the morning and bring a picnic with you. Then, I'd head over to Rittenhouse square. I'd walk down Walnut St. to 16th and up to Chestnut St, and come back to 18th. I'd walk up and down 18th. There are tons of shops and a few galleries and hundreds of restaurants. If this is a Saturday, there tons of things happening in Rittenhouse Sq. There are jugglers and musicians and people doing all kinds of things. There may even be a festival of some kind. In the evening, after eating, I might head over to West Philly to see what's happening at the Rotunda. Events there are often free. Or I might go east to see what's happening in Society Hill and on 2nd and 3rd Streets. There are plenty of galleries and restaurants over there, too. You could stop to have dessert somewhere, and then, if you were with someone you felt that way about, you could take a romantic walk along the Delaware, looking at the lights of the bridge and the boats going by. Except for the food, walking and looking is free. You can stroll, so it isn't really running around. You can stop and sit just about anywhere, if you need a break. Or you don't even have to walk much at all. Just pick a place and sit and watch the people go by.  All these places are great places to watch people.

It really depends on what you want to see.  If you're interested in the historical aspect of the city, then you should stick to the Old City/Independence Mall areas. This is where the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross house, etc are located.  The answer by is good, but sounds like he has you walking all over the place. There are a few tour buses that you can ride to see more of the city quicker, but you are limited to what they want to show you.  I would stay away from the Duck Boat tours though, unless you want to hear a bunch of kids blowing duck horns the whole entire time. A place I would highly recommend you visit would be the Morris House hotel and M Restaurant (8th street and St. James street), this is where a lot of the meetings took place for the discussions of the writing of the Declaration of Independence, and it's not to far from Washington Square, where the soldiers that died fighting in the Revolutionary war are buried.  The memorial in Washington Square is nice.  Philly also has some walking tours that take you through the historic areas of the city.  I would recommend going to Reading Terminal Market, it's a very interesting place.  Also the Italian Market on 9th street is great, and if you walk south through the Italian Market it will take you to the Passyunk triangle where Pats and Genos are located.
