How can I create computer keyboard shortcuts to type faster, like I can on my iPhone?

For example, if I type "eml," I have my phone set to automatically change it to my email address. I have a bunch of shortcuts like this and I'd love to be able to use them on my computer for things I frequently type in email messages. I'm using the Chrome browser on a Mac with OS X. Please understand that I am not looking for the type of keyboard shortcut that causes an action, such as saving, closing, pasting, etc. I want to replace my text automatically so I can type faster.
