The optical drive is a CD/DVD drive and yes if it does not come with one you will not be able to watch DVD's or install software from disc. or copy to a disc. You can buy and use a external CD/DVD optical drive. This must be a net book and not a full featured lap top. This is only one of the draw backs from buying a net book.
