    As a first step I suggest trying the following procedure from Samsung's Support Knowledge Base [1]: "If you connect your TV to a video source (a DVD player, home theater system, set top box, etc.) with HDMI, you must set the audio output of the source to PCM audio. If the audio output is set to Bitstream, you will not get any sound. See the user's manual of your audio source for instructions on how to set the audio output to PCM audio."

Have you tried connecting the sound using the conventional two L and R audio cables? Not that this solves the initial problem, but if this works it would seem to focus the problem solely on the HDMI connection.

This is an issue with the player... Maybe... See here is the thing. HDMI 1.0 only supported certain types of audio. So if your player has that old of technology, it may not support the audio portion of the DVD. Go buy a samsung upconvert player and use the same hdmi cable.
