because diesel gas is much more volatile and is easily combustable with pressure alone. the force of the piston pressing the fuel against the cylinder walls, mixed with a spark, is more than enough to create combustion. this allows diesel engines to make a good bit of power at extremely low peak RPM's in comparison with a gas engine. gasoline requires additional oxygen mixed with the spark and fuel in order to maintain combustion inside the engine, which accounts for the higher compression ratio.

The first couple of answers are good. Also the pressures required for diesel are so high that many components like crank, big ends, small ends, con rods, block, cylinder head are much more expensive to manufacture.
