Should we take this baby squirrel home?

  • Answer:

In many states it is illegal to take wildlife home and keep as pets. If he (or she) LEGALLY can, I am all for it. If it was me, I would give it to a rescue shelter who eventually set him free when he is ready. If he has a scar, get him checked for rabies--just in case.

As long as you have a suitable container to keep him in. Something that can't be chewed so like a metal cage and just keep him fed and plenty of water to make a recovery but then let him go after a maximum of 1 week or if he hasn't healed he will die anyway. Also as a word of warning most squirrel carry infectious diseases and since he is wounded the disease progress further and become more likely to infect you even if you don't get bitten. If you do and it break the skin you will have to go to hospital to get it check and to get a jab to protect you from the common diseases they carry. The choice and risk is yours to take. Weigh up the Info I provided and do some research if you decide to keep. Also squirrels are very messy and noisy

TheSquirrelBoard is an excellent squirrel forum created and run by squirrel experts. Many of the members are licensed wildlife rehabilitators. I highly recommend you ask on TSB for advice because the people there have the experience you need to determine if this squirrel requires care, is releasable later and if not, all of the necessary information from diet to housing to ensure he has a happy and healthy life. The people at TSB are super friendly and super helpful. If you find out this little one needs care, but you would rather someone else takeover, they will find the closest person near you to take him. Link to forum is below: http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/index.php (If you do not see an activation e-mail soon in your In-Box, check your Spam and Trash folders. My virus protection software inadvertently sent mine there by mistake.) I am a HUGE squirrel fan and have been feeding the locals for years. Yay to you for caring about this squirrel. I am sure you can guess what my vote would be about taking him home, but I shall say it anyway...YES!!! It may turn out he is fine on his own, but better to keep him safe with you until the squirrel experts at TSB can give you proper advice.

It's likely if you do not take him, he will get preyed on by a cat or dog. If he's friendly to people some kids might find it fun to hurt or kill him which is a widely known thing for cruel little punks to do. Many kids believe them to be great for target practice if they have BB guns or Nerf guns. I would never leave him alone out there, if he's young he may have lost his parents and so he may not know what is dangerous and what is okay. Take him home and place him in a carrier or room h can't escape from, then call your local wildlife control and ask them if it's legal for your area to own squirrels. Some places you're allowed to own them and some they are considered dangerous and since they are able to repopulate and survive in different places they could be not allowed for the fear they may overbreed and infest an area or become pest to neighborhoods or hurt pets and children. If he isn't legal to own you can request they pick him up, they may take him to a wildlife reserve where he will be safe, tell them is isn't afraid of people and that he may get killed by someone or hurt as some people are awful. - Most serial killers or murderers start off with torturing pets and animals and killing them. - So it's likely they would take him somewhere where he won't be around people. If it's legal to own him or own a permit to on them, then hey, you'll have amazing little pet and everyone will be shocked if they see you strolling around with a little squirrel with a harness on. Makes a great story for people who are animal lovers and I'd love to own one myself. ^_^

No, not until he gets better.

No, wildlife is a very finely balanced thing and should be left alone, how would you like it if instead of killing and eating the one baby a predator went and killed and ate a pregnant female instead? Set it free.
