What exactly does an asthma inhaler do?

What is a way to relieve asthma (weezing) without an inhaler?

  • My inhaler instantle cures any wheezing or tight chested feelings I get from my mild asthma. However, if I don't have an inhaler handy, is there some other method/household ...show more

  • Answer:

Drink extremely hot coffee. I have had doctors and magazines say this while your having an asthma attack. It does work. Also use Teas Mint or any hot teas. It breaks up the mucous. Another old 100 year remedy is to take garlic and press it or smash it rub on the bottom of both feet. It is a grandma's remedy. It seems to work also. Slow deep breathing push all air out of lungs and take deep breaths soothing and calming.

You should ALWAYS have your inhaler handy, you cannot mess around with Asthma, you have to be a bit more responsible. Without a bronchial dilator relieving constriction in your chest would be a problem...breathing exercises are sometimes beneficial. To be honest, if you have a prescription that shows you have been prescribed an inhaler within the last 6 months, most pharmacists would sell it to you (not sure they are supposed to, but they do!), if not, and your peak flow drops, then you'll have to go to hospital. And quite rightly so, you will receive a lecture from the A & E Dr regarding the dangers of poor Asthma managment and misusing (unnecessarily) the emergency services. And just reiterating what Dr Frank said; steam can make Asthma worse. Also I wouldn't use Vix Vapour rub either, this will neither help asthma and could make it worse.

No I am afraid not. Also about 15 years ago the Asthma Society produced clear guidelines that steam was NOT to be used to manage asthmatic wheeze as it actually made the problem worse!

Eat/drink something with lots of caffeine. As much and as soon as you can. For some reason this works. Something like coffee without milk so that the caffeine content isn't watered down by the milk. Having said that it's always best to have a reliever with you just in case. Asthma is a horrible disease. Believe me, I know but the coffee method I wrote about above is only for if you haven't got a reliver inhalor with you, not as a substitute. I'd love to not use any inhalors because I don't use things that are tested on animals but the reliever is something you should never be without.

No, not really. You could try and calm down your breathing, but nothing is going to open your lungs like Albuterol. Make sure you are using a spacer, you get 80% MORE of the medicine that way!

You can start doing Yoga deep breathing exercises to help your lungs work better. You can avoid anything that you know causes the attack. I have used Vicks VapoRub on a tissue as an assist and it helps but not very rapidly. Make a pouch for your inhaler and never be without it. Put it on your belt.

Try a paper bag! It helps me. And without one, just take deep, slow breaths. And use a humidifier! That helps a lottt hope it works!
