How easy is it to damage your vocal chords?

Does singing during puberty damage your vocal chords?

  • I have heard that singing during puberty can potentially damage your vocal chords. Is this true?

  • Answer:

Absolutely not. Whoever told you this lied. Actually it is best you sing through puberty, to help to develop your instrument into maturity. Your instrument is going through stages, so some notes may feel slightly awkward though your passaggio and tessitura, but eventually it will iron itself out. Just make sure you don't push your instrument to make sounds its not comfortable making and that you are using proper breathing technique. Whatever you do, NEVER stop singing through the stage.

You can damage your voice during this time if you force it to do something that you could do either earlier or before. Just do not force it . Sometimes it will work wonderfully for you and another time it will not. Just take it easy and enjoy.

I think it's just straining it too much that does damage, cause your voice changes during puberty.
