What's my holiday entitlement?

  • I know that the holiday year runs from 1st April to 31st March. I started working for this company on the 7th of June this year. My company gives 25 days holiday. My question is ...show more

  • Answer:

It depends how the company calculates the Holiday Pay. Some companies will just give you the lump sum at the beginning of their fiscal year. Most that do this will prorate your Holiday Pay if you started late in the fiscal year. Other companies split your holiday pay up. For instance, my employer gives me 6 hours Holiday Pay per pay period. I get paid every other week, for a total of 26 pay periods a year. So I get about 4 weeks paid Holiday per year, but I earn it slowly over time. I would call your Human Resource department and ask how they calculate Holiday Pay at you specific organization.

You are legally entitled to 28 days in the UK, if you work a typical pattern. It is strictly expressed as 5.6 weeks. This includes Bank Holidays, so if you think you get 25, then the 8 bank hols should be on top, making 33 in total. It should be pro-rated in your year of joining, so you will get about 10/12ths in the first holiday year, or about 27 days, based on a gross total of 33. Full details at the links below.
