    Hello Jeff S., Yes, the fingernails grow out from the cutticle/lunula. Actually, the nails are dead material, and merely have the purpose to 'protect' the tip of your finger. So, in general your splitting nail is no problem at all! However, be carefull that the splitting does not cause infections - for infections can cause rather nasty side-effects ... especially because obviously you like to continue your baseball sport.
