How do I change my PS3 Hard Drive?

If I change my PS3's 60gb Hard drive will I lose my 'backwards capability'?

  • What I'm trying to ask is: Is the backwards capability of a 60gb PS3 stored on the hard drive or is there like a chip or something?

  • Answer:

No, because the Hard Drive doesn't have the Emotion chip that enables you to play PS2 games. So, no the Hard Drive doesn't have stored data, it is the Emotion chip. Instead, if you took out the Emotion chip, then you wouldn't be able to play PS2 games.

Other answers

The backwards compatibility of the 60GB PS3 comes from the Emotion Engine of the PS2 being built in to the system. Its not software emulation. So, you're good to swap out your 60GB hard drive for a bigger one.

The backwards capabilities are stored in the chip called the Emotion Engine. It makes absolutely no sense to place this chip within the hard drive. PS2 games will work just fine with any hard drive. -Evan

If i where you i wouldnt change it all. Keep it original because you have what they call a limited edition and it worth lots more . If you go changing things you can hurt the value of your ps3. I have one and i tried to change the os and they computer tech advised me to leave it original it will be worth twice as much as you paid for it.
