Stretches for Figure Skaters?

  • Hey, im a 11 year oldfigure skater. I might be doing compititions soon but need to be more flexible. Any Stretching ideas???

  • Answer:

I'm a 14 year old figure skater! :) Just turned 14 on March 2nd actually haha! CONGRADULATIONS on starting competitions soon! Make sure you give it your all ;) You definitely want to get to Regionals. Erm, if you're going to competitions, shouldn't you already be flexible? That is, of course, if you are going to preform moves that need flexibility, like the Camel Spin and possible Lutz Jump. Are you that advanced, yet? Anyway, I do stretches EVERY night before I go to bed. -I sit flat on the ground, legs straight together in front of me, and reach over to touch my toes. I hold that position until my forehead touches my knees. -I stand up and touch my toes, until my hands are flat on the ground. -THE MOST IMPORTANT one is practicing your splits. Since this one is bound to be the hardest, you're going to have to start off in the splitz position and lower yourself a little bit lower everynight 'til you can do the splits.

Just type in on youtube figure skating stretches for what you need to work on

Do a youtube search, stretches for skaters aren't really different from stretches for ballet or gymnastics that much. DO: - stretch only (!) on warm muscles, preferably after a training - allow a muscle to recover if you find you've over stretched it to prevent lasting injury - discuss this with your coach and have her show you a few stretches and exercises, ways to grab your foot and blade (is important), etc. DO NOT: - stretch in skates (will break down your skates faster) except maybe for the biellmann, cuz there how you grab the blade is important - stretch "bouncily". The correct way to stretch is to get into the stretching position and hold it for about 30 seconds. If you do bouncy stretches, you end up shortening the muscle more than you stretch it. - stretch on cold muscles (you'll make tiny tears in your muscles)
