Any tips on studying abroad in Florence?

What is the most cost and time effective way of traveling between Florence, Italy and Palermo, Italy?

  • I'm hoping to get in touch with my ancestry while studying abroad in Florence. Also, any tips on traveling to / housing in the villages my ancestors lives would be great!

  • Answer:

Your Best bet, most comfortable way of traveling, would be by ferry, from Livorno, direct to Palermo. No fuss, no muss. I took the train once, the length of the country, and that is a long ride, and the trains can be zoo's sometimes. (And we got stopped in the middle for a strike, leaving me stranded, half way there........and cooling my heels, for hours. The Ferry, is a smooth, hassle free ride, and for a few dollars more.....you can even get a bed for an overnight trip. Small cabins, bunk beds.....you can stretch out. Plane of course is fastest, but perhaps not easier, and perhaps more expensive. I vote for the Ferry when possible, when criss crossing Italy on those long hauls.

Don't do the planes.. you have to go through all that customs stuff, and lines.. who wants to do that? Taking the train is better because you can see the scenery of everything! Although...Florence to Palermo... you would have to switch it over quite a bit. Taking about 12 hours by train. I went to a travel agent for this because I wanted to go to Calabria and I live 2 hours north of Rome. You would have to take the train to pisa first, then switch trains and take the pisa to Rome train. Then you would have to switch another train in Rome that goes to Napoli.. but I dont htink you switch that one.. and then you dont switch over until you are at the train station in Lamezia.. okay... Best said now. Plane is EASY! lol.. do that.. now that I think of it. And it's less time consuming :) Enjoy your trip! ahhh beautiful!

The train takes forever so the ship but if you want to see the country the first would be a good choice, if you want to relax, have a good meal an a good sleep get the ferry. All the prices are comparable to airfare, that obviously is faster.

You can easily get between Florence and Rome. I also went to Sicily while I was studying abroad and time was an issue for me too. I found out that the most time efficient way of traveling was to fly. But even then the schedule was not ideal. I arrived in Palermo on Friday at near dinner time. I stayed all day Saturday and flew back to Rome at about noon on Sunday. I would love to have stayed longer on Sunday. I had class early Monday morning. There are other airports in Sicily. Besides the airport in Palermo, there is also one in Trapani. The rest are on the eastern part of the island. You can take the train but it is a long ride. There IS a train from Calabria to Messina. If you plan to go to a village that's closer to Palermo then you have to catch another long train ride. EDIT: The person who said you have to go through customs is wrong. If you are already in Italy than you do not have to go through customs. Also, Palermo has a small airport and the planes that serve it aren't as big. You won't find long lines. I flew on Meridiana Airlines. It's smaller than, say, AlItalia.
