You can use anything that keeps you swallowing. The popping is cause by the pressure on one side of your ear drum rising/falling below the pressure on the other side. The simple way to equalize is to swallow. So chewing gum or sweets or anything will do the trick, as chewing causes you to swallow as a natural reaction. Gum will last longer. But I find candy better as you actually HAVE something (the dissolving candy) to swallow gradually over time, rather than dry swallowing. My mum used to believe that holding plastic cups with damp tissue in the end over both ears would stop the popping. The things people must have through to see me, my brother, and sister sitting in the plane holding cups over our ears?! It didn't work!

Just use the Valsalva maneuver. It is impossible to prevent it completely.

Better gum and it can be any type. I travel a lot from Country to Country and I have to stay 13 hours in the airplane, so I always carry gum with me and wet napkins for the dry condition. You will need it as well if it is your first time traveling.
