Exactly how bad is it to sleep with your contacts in?
-
I have regular one-month contacts, but I'm just too damn lazy and poor to take them out or buy the dailies. Am I going to go blinder than I already am?

Answer:
Contact lenes deprive the cornea of needed oxygen. They are semi-permeable so they do allow some to get through. At night when you sleep your eyelids are covering your corneas thus preventing even more oxygen to permeate. Lack of oxygen to the cornea can create corneal ulcers. Not only are they are painful!!!!!, cause severe light sensitivity, they can lead to blindness...scarring of the cornea. You do not need your contact lenses to see in your dreams. : ) Don't take a chance....do take them out!

I'm going to tell you from personal experience that sleeping in your contacts is only convenient until you get a horrible infection. My last infection messed up my cornea enough that I was without my contacts for a month and a half. My infection hurt severely and I could not even go outside because of the light sensitivity. I had to see my ophthalmologist once a week for 6 weeks ($150 in copays) plus I had to pay around $50 for the medicated drops. When the doctor finally ok'd me to wear my contacts my vision was decreased to about 20/50. Now 6 months later my vision is finally back to about 20/30 but I'm lucky that it wasn't worse than that. I was actually told that I could sleep in these lenses as long as I changed every week....but that infection was bad enough that I have been much more careful. This sort of infection may not happen after one night of falling asleep but rest assured with continual mistreatment of your eyes something will happen. Sometimes it takes a bad infection to make you change your mind...it did with me, lol.

I have slept a time or two with my contacts in and they were a pain to get out the next morning. My eyes were swollen and VERY dry. I do not suggest it.

I doubt it will hurt your vision as much as they say it will. The only issue I have had is waking up and my vision is blurry and my eyes are dry until I take them out and clean them. They say, though, that sleeping with them in can shorten the lifespan of the lens. I get the kind you wear for two weeks because dailies are just too expensive for me. I take them out every night and I can usually make one pair last for about a month and a half with no problems.
