Why is it bad to sleep with contacts?

Is it really that bad to sleep with your contacts in?

  • Everyone says it's bad because they get dry and crusty in your eyes o.o But people I know who have contacts say they've slept with them in a few hours and it was like they ...show more

  • Answer:

Just like prince there, I'll make an analogy. Is it really that bad to eat food after it's expiration date? Other people have done it, they don't get sick. But some get VIOLENTLY ill. It's the equivalent of that on your EYES! I do not understand for the life of me why anyone would risk your vision, your sight, the way you see the world for pure laziness. Seriously, if you can't take them out, wear glasses. I know that sounds kind of harsh, but I've seen so many people with infections, protein build up, some even needing surgery because of naivety or sheer laziness. Good luck.

Most eye doctors will recommend that you NOT sleep with your contacts in because, with your eyes closed, your eyes are not getting enough oxygen as when they are open. If you wear soft lenses, they'll recommend that you use drops because the lenses themselves act as barriers--they prevent your eyes from getting enough oxygen. If your eyes are red, your eyes are dry. If your eyes dry out, the contact lens can get STUCK on your eyeball. And it's difficult to get them off when that happens. And sometimes, this can lead to a scratched cornea, which is extremely painful. Yes, it's a hassle. But if you really can't be bothered with taking care of your eyes and removing your contacts at night, maybe you should stick to glasses. What's more important? Sleeping with your lenses in, or having healthy eyes?

is it really that bad to run a stop sign? everyone says its bad b/c you could get stopped by the police and get a ticket or have a car accident. but people i know who have run stop signs say they've done it a few times and no one even knew. my aunt said she ran 8 in a row and it was perfectly fine. i've done it a few times also and it was fine. so if everyone runs stop signs, does it really make a big difference? sorry i was trying to make a point by being funny...not trying to offend. but the point is valid: sleeping in contacts GREATLY increases your risk of problems, just like running a stop sign increases your risk of a ticket or accident. plus over the long term you an also have problems...corneal neovascularization, etc so...yes it can be a big deal

Yes its terrible, your blood vessels can start growing over the contact lens.

When I wore contacts (I have since had lasik surgery) I wore disposable lenses. They were the kind you wore daily, took out a night and threw away after a month. I would sleep with them in for the whole month, never taking them out and then throw them away. When I ran out of contacts and was away at college I wore a pair for two months, never taking them out, until I could get more at the eye doctor. I never had any problems. The only time I did not wear my contacts was the few times I had pink eye, but I work around children so the so called "kid-germs" would get to me occasionally.
