  • Answer:

I have arthritis too, osteo and rheumatoid. I don't take painkillers but do use herbs when I need to. I take one St. Johnswort with Rosemary (only found one brand with this combination, Nature's Way) and it is very good for the inflammation and fatigue (I can feel it in my hands and legs if I miss about a week, and have tried that experiment 3 times). I took 3 per day for about the first week and then 1 a day from then on. When the weather is cold or my joints are stressed from work, I drink ginger tea or use fresh ginger or the powdered form in cooking. Ginger is a wonder anti-inflammatory and painkiller and that is about all the extra remedy I have need for the past 16 years. I started craving ginger when my arthritis started showing symptoms and have been using it ever since. Other spices are turmeric (in the gnger family), curry powder blends, garam masala, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, bay leaf. There may be more too. These spices are a lot safer on my stomach, have had problems with most of the recommended over-the-counter anti inflamatories, so I don't use them at all. My daughter has systemic lupus and I asked her rheumatologist about taking fish oil supplements. She said eating fish was very good and recommended that but taking enough supplements to have very good relief would often cause the body to smell like fish and most people can't handle that. Also I have tried it and burp up a fish taste, can't stand that. I will eat salmon, tuna, and other fatty fish and that is OK. You might try some other good oil foods such as flaxseed, black seed (also known as black cumin seed, it is not too common here where I live and have purchased it on websites) extra virgin olive oil, etc.
