    Valencia would be my choice, I live half way between the 2 Cities and have always considered Valencia to be the more vibrant and cosmopolitan of the two. That's not to say that there is anything wrong with Alicante, it too has a lot to offer. I have lived in between Valencia and Alicante. I think the city of Valencia is a great place and you don't have to learn Valenciano. They speak Spanish there, Valenciano is for the villagers. As for Alicante, the towns are nicer the then city. The city is small and boring, so either area has it's advantages.
