What makes a good instant messaging app?
-
Hello! A friend of mine and I are developing an android messenger app. I was wondering, what should we take into consideration when adding features and building the user interface. What I am trying to ask is that, what makes a good instant messaging app and how can we compete with top apps like WhatsApp? Also we are still in high school so we have a good chunk of time after school or on the weekends! Thank you.

Answer:
Mobile messages are a big business as tons of new and even established mobile messaging apps compete to meet the growing demands expected from the users. Older mobile apps, which are already very much established, like Facebook Messenger and Skype Messenger are competing with start up mobile messaging apps, including MessageMe, Viber, Line and TextMe tirelessly. However, what I think would really put one of them above all the rest would be if one of them incorporated this new SDK, called Aniyways. They provide an ever changing list of emoticons which users don't have to search for. Their technology is so smart, that when a user types in a word, the app will automatically provide them with different emoticons to fit what they are typing. In a world where emoticons are practically a new form of language, this would definitely put one messaging app above the rest.

One thing I've been noticing about some third party google talk apps is that they are required to ask the user to sign back in every few hours. That means that if the user doesn't check the app, and realize they've been signed out, they won't receive any messages via the app. This is irritating for both users, since I know the person I'm trying to message isn't offline by choice, but because the app kicked him off without his knowledge. Don't let that happen with your app and you're off to a good start. Bonus tip: Persistance. If I get a message, I want to know about it right now, no matter what app I'm using. Allow me to set a custom ringtone for messages received through your app, and allow me to set custom notification frequencies.

What's out there: There's omegele which is completely open, random and anoymous. Then there's the traditional IM app: like AIM, YIM, Facebook chat, etc. Where friends need to be approved, chats are private, etc. Social trends: Many of the social networks that are coming out now are using the "follow" model and hash tags, popularized by Twitter and then Instagram. Vine is one great example. The follow/hash tag model provides for a much faster popularity growth rate. What you can build: An app that combines instant messaging with the follow/hashtag model. Example: Two users like Michael Jordan, they follow him, and want to talk about his #freethrowlinedunk (whatever). Your app can hook those people up in a chat. Some controls can be on a max number of people that can join etc. You don't have to build the social net yourself, you can integrate with twitter. Competition: Don't be afraid to compete. Google came out much later than yahoo, altavista, etc, build something great then market the heck out of it, and continue making it greater.

for one is competing for the teen (high school?) market with stickers, while others have joined in - (though I haven't seen this.) But, I've seen "cute" stuff since the days of in the 1990s. So, it needs to stand out, by being cute like these, or with some other emotional qualities.

First and foremost it needs to be decided whether the app will work on just cellular network (like SMS) or cellular data ie internet (or wifi for that matter). The main thing that whatsapp has is that its interface is damn simple. You don't have to be an expert to use it. What you can do is, create an app that will detect if the recipient has that app as well or not and then send it via that app or text. For example, if I send a message to a person XYZ, the app should automatically detect if XYZ has this very same app. If he has then send it through it. Else send it as a text. Similarly, if due to some reasons XYZ has lost internet connectivity and doesn't get the message through the app, then in that case the app should inform the sender that the message has not been delivered and ask if the same message should be sent via text.

As per todayâs trend, there has been a surge in the rise of Whatsapp clone apps. But if you are planning to compete with biggies like Whatsapp, then your messaging app should be far ahead of Whatsapp in terms of features. Only then you qualify to compete with them.Coming to your question, if your instant messaging app comprises the following features, it stands a good chance to attract users:· Group chats· Push Notifications· Location Tracking· Social Media Integrated· Auto Syncing feature across all devices· Voice and Video calling· Multimedia and Easy screen sharing· Highly layered securityAs you people are in your high school, some features might sound Greek and Latin to you. But currently, live chat users prefer such features as they are looking forward to having a realistic conversation with their contacts through chat apps.Nowadays, there are readymade solutions like http://www.contus.com/messaging-solutions.php that lets you create instant messaging apps within quick time span. Given below is the architecture of Contus Fly for your reference: The highlight of such solutions is that they have been exclusively built incorporating the above features. In fact you can purchase the SDK of Contus Fly and if you have the technical expertise, you can use it to your advantage and incorporate many features to messaging app.P.S: Since you are school children, I am not sure how cost-effective will this solution be to you.

Mobile messaging apps are playing a vital role in establishing a tranquil communication. Due to increase in the number of mobile and smartphone users, people are now using mobile messaging apps more than ever before. And statistics show that people use messaging apps more than the traditional SMS message. According to Informa â in 2012, around 19 billion messages were sent per day on chat apps, compared with 17.6 billion SMS texts. Over the past three-four years, mobile messaging apps such as WhatsApp and SnapChat are ruling the mobile app world with blasting number of downloads and have become some of the most popular mobile apps around. All depends upon your offerings and the way you approach the market. http://www.appstudioz.com/blog/era-of-traditional-message-seems-to-be-diminishing-after-the-arrival-of-messaging-apps/

Well it is not unknown to the user or people that messaging has revolutionized the whole and definitely changed the way communicate. Earlier we use to message with one application(that is the in-built messenger) send picture or videos like an MMS. Now the things had completely changed like pick any application or I would say every application today have message feature which also help users share stuffs like video, image, voice etc. Yes the messaging has taken a huge leap. But the question is how different you are from the others or I would say how different you are from Whatsapp Read More About:

Think about the most popular instant messaging app - WhatsAppThank about the worst instant messaging app - Hangouts (arguably)Compare. Youâll come to know that it is not the features of the app, but the user-friendliness matters. Quick response to the user interactions like tap, double-tap, long press etc. Reliability. How quickly the message reaches the recipient. Security. Is the conversation secure from all types of hacks/eves-dropping? There could be more. But these are the bare necessities a messaging app need to get it right to be called âgoodâ.https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.akl.whatspic
