How do ships float?

If ships are so heavy, how do they float?

  • Most of them are like 45,000 tons! Its amazing how they float in the water, something so heavy. How is this possible?

  • Answer:

They displace more water than they weigh. Google "displacement".

They are hollow, so there for they might be heavy, but they are less dense than water. The air inside of the ship weighs significantly less than the water so the hull is pushed up by the water. Floating has nothing to do with weight, otherwise a pebble should float while a person should sink.
