    Tv viewing figures come from BARB,( Broadcasters Audience Research Board) They have 5,100 homes across the UK, monitoring a total of 11,500 people within them. These households are carefully selected to represent a cross section of the population of the UK - So each person in these BARB monitored household represents 5,284 people, so actually, viewing figures are really an estimate. The TVs in these households electronically monitor what people are watching on a minute by minute basis so they know which programmes are flicked over, at which point people lose interest etc.

I was monitored for a time by the Neilson ratings system. They took me off because my taste in programming wasn't mainstream enough. Apparently originality isn't tolerated by the media moguls.

Neilson ratings actually survey people and ask; they even have boxes in some people homes that monitor what they are watching.

Neilson Box. They hook something up to your TV and monitor what you watch. They do it in a certain number of households countrywide and the idea is that statistically they get accurate results for the whole country. Neilsen also uses booklets for people to manually record (write) what they watch for a week. Booklets are mailed back to them.

Neilson connects a tuning box to hundreds of "average" homeowner's Tv sets....it records and sends the data...Of course, that was a big deal back in the 70's and 80's, being a Neilson Family..... Wouldn't surprise me that cable / satellite boxes could do that too, without us knowing it....Do you REALLY know what your Cable box does LATE at night??
