I have a dodge neon 02 sxt and my brakes make loud screeching sounds! Help?

i was wondering if there was a way for me to fix this myself rather than take it to a mechanic.

Answer:
NOT TO SOUND DISRESPECTFUL BUT IF YOU HAVE NO EXPERIENCE THEN DON'T TRY THIS FOR YOUR SAFETY AS WELL AS FOR OTHERS. TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.

Your brake shoes or pads may be getting low...The pads have a small piece of metal that will rub on the rotor when they get low...This is a warning to have them checked out...You can fix them your self but I would suggest a pro...There are special tools and you may have to turn the rortors on a lathe to smooth them out..If you have done brakes before then go for it..If not at least get a friend that knows to help you...

Can you say brake job? Please dont do this yourself, unless you dont ever want to stop your car again. I am not saying you CANT do this yourself, but if you have no experience, wouldnt you rather trust a pro? I mean, you would not replace your roof if you did not know how, right? I once heard someone say, if you are going to spend as much in parts and your own hard labor, as you would to pay someone to do it, why do it yourself.

Sounds like the brake indicators are rubbing as most suggested. Brakes however are one of the few things Do It Yourselvers can still do but SHOULD NOT DO!!! Brake pads are an easy removal. Anyone can do it. What you can't do is turn your own rotors. Even if you take them off and take them to be turned it's not worth it. By the time you consider your time and the expense of the pads and machining of the rotors, you will actually pay more money. Most shops promote brake jobs as a leader item. If you let them do the whole job it will be cheaper. They also have the tools to determine if rotors need to be replaced. You would believe how many people pay more than they should because they tried to do brakes themselves. Call around to local shops but you can get a good brake job for a good price. Use Raybesteos pads from Car Quest and request the "blue" pads. They are a little more expensive but they last longer and are guaranteed against noise by the manufature. Don't get pads from NAPA or Autozone. Duralast from Advanced are ok but the Raybesteos are the best pads. If you are on a budget then Raybesteos Reds are good. By the way if you see one of those $59.99 brake specials your are getting ripped off in the long run. Plus they charge you extra to turn rotors etc etc. They also put organic pads on the car which don't last anytime. Sure those places have lifetime guarantee on the pads. That saves you $10 because that's what they will tell you they cost. You still have to pay the labor again, which the second time around will be more than $59. You can bet on that.

yeah, buy the parts yourself and get some tools. . . put the car up on jacks, take off (one tire at a time) the tire then ( find out first disk brakes or drum, pretty sure disc.) but get the parts them remove the old discs and put the new ones in. . . . if you need extra room to insert the new ones get a "C-clamp" and tighten the old brake to "flush" , as far as it will go, then put in the new brake where the old one was. you can save hundreds of dollars by doing this yourself. also to help you out I would suggest buyin a "chiltons" guide or book of your car. that way you can do more than just brakes to save money if something wrong happens to your car. good luck!

I think you need to change the brakes dude. ofcourse you could do it yourself, just go to an auto parts and tell them your car information and they will give you the correct brake pads for you car. to learn how to change them browse the web you should be able to find the answer.

Yes. You can start with the brake pads, their simple to replace. But a reputable business can determine if your roters need turning or grinding down. Probably not though.
