What do you think about the NCLB Act?

  • Teachers, do you feel that this Act has hindered your own philosophy of education?

  • Answer:

I am against NCLB. Principals aren't often that smart in the first place, usually failed teachers, and now they're told their job depends on how well the students perform on government issued tests in reading and mathematics, and they use that as an excuse to have 3 or 4 reading classes a day and 2 or 3 math, taking science down to 1 period a week, and music, art and gym often down to 0. This is how it works in my school. The music teachers I know, keep their jobs because they have to teach a reading class every day. This isn't education. This is the lack of an education. NCLB has created a monster. Good teachers are all leaving the profession, and the worse are going to stay. Failure is rewarded, because we want kids that can do the 3 Rs, but can't compete in a scientific world that requires creativity, like only a classic liberal arts education can provide. It's even trickling up, as the New York Times pointed out this week in an article. Many Universities are cutting back on the liberal arts "electives," no wonder our youngest engineers can't solve problems anymore. They're just computers, waiting to be replaced by real inhuman robots.

I'm not a teacher but I have heard their comments on it, and I have some opinions of my own. First of all, to me it is leaving all children behind. Teachers are told what to teach, when to teach it, etc. They are mandated by the state on this. And they have a specific amount of time to teach a concept, so if a child doesn't learn it, oh well, they move ahead. And, some teachers have to teach specific subjects at certain times of the day and if they don't, they get reprimanded. And, teachers can only teach what is on the state tests, so to me this is CHEATING. Students are now robots, being spoon fed information to MEMORIZE, not LEARN, in order to pass the state tests so the school can GET MORE MONEY! Schools change answers on the students tests, leave out the lowest scores, all with the approval of their state board of education! This was on yahoo news not too long ago. And in Atlanta, GA, some schools are PAYING the kids to get good grades!! About the kids memorizing instead of learning, they will grow up not knowing how to think for themselves, they will have to have everyone TELL them what to do, just like their teachers did. To me, this is the start of communism. Another thing, the standards in school are LOWERED so the kids can pass the state tests so the schools can GET MORE MONEY. It has NOTHING to do with learning how to READ!! MOST parents don't even know all this is going on. THey don't know that when their child goes to college, lots of them will have to drop out because they didn't learn in school what they needed to know in order to suceed in college. This happened to a VALEDICTORIAN of a school not too long ago!!
