Great! How long have you been running? This is a major determining factor in saying how long it takes to get in shape for a marathon. I'm a 5K runner, and it will take me until April to do 10Ks, and the summer for Mini Marathons. Looking for my first marathon next year, and I started running a year ago. Two years from sitting on the couch to being able to run marathons. Plenty of marathon training schedules out there. I've used CoolRunning in the past, and I'm training for the 10K with SparkPeople. Both will have programs based on where you are right now, and Spark also has diet programs for your increasing activity levels - offers a vegetarian program too.

Good on you, and you seem to be doing about it in the right way. Definitely do the half before you tackle the big one, and even if you are a complete beginner you will be able to run a half by October. Have a look at Jeff Galloway's training, involving a walk and run technique. He has had many beginners finishing the marathon. Just ease yourself into the training to avoid injury and stay focused, marathon training is a large commitment. When you start upping the mileage each week you will need more and more protein (i think it's roughly 1.2grams per Kg of body-weight), but they are plenty of supplements you can take to boast your protein intake and they tend to be Soy proteins, etc. So your vegi diet will not matter. All the best in your training

I have just run Disney marathon and I run about 6 half marathons a year I am also a veggie. I live on peanut butter. Make sure that you eat plenty of nuts, beans and pulses along with fruit and veg.wholemeal rice, pasta pitta, cous cous cous humus.also take a really good vitamin supplement. As for the training go to the runners world web site and follow their marathon training plan. Don't set yourself unrealistic goals. Most of all enjoy yourself.
