What do you think about NCLB?

Do you have a child with a learning disability and do you think NCLB is helping?

  • Is NCLB program making sure that these kids who have LD are not just being passed on without mastering thier skills, etc.

  • Answer:

Agree. NCLB is WONDERFUL......on paper. But, kids with learning challenges might take longer to make the kind of progress expected out of them in 1 school year. And, it's not just kids with challenges. Let's face it....not all of us will be excellent in math, lanauge arts, science....whatever. Some of us have skills which will make us great writers, caregivers, chefs, construction workers, etc.... NCLB does not take into consideration the fact that we all learn differently and have different strengths.

I work in a special education classroom and I don't think NCLB helps at all it just makes things difficult for the teachers to teach! The children still get passed along with little or no progress toward their goals. A student I had two years ago a ninth grader was reading at the pre K level and is now an 11 th grader ans still not reading any better. Nothing is being done to help him and he is not the only case!!!!!!!

No. The only ones who can really make sure their child is not left behind is the parents. As with any "government system" people just find ways around doing what they are supposed to. Also there is just not enough funding for the teachers to do what the NCLB requires. The only students I have seen it help are the ones whose parents are very involved and making sure the school is doing what NCLB requires. By the way, no one enforces this law. You know like we might get a speeding ticket if we break a speeding law. The "powers that be" don't come around and check on schools and give tickets. By the time a school gets noticed, it is a full blown head on car crash. Go to wrightslaw.com for some great information.

Those of use in special education are getting very frustrated with NCLB because it is not realistic and doesn't provide our students the tools necessary to meet their needs. Some children don't need a 'mainstream' education but more in the way of daily living skills. NCLB doesn't recognize this and has forced states to have all students work toward the same goal. That's totally insane.

No Child Left Behind should be renamed... All Children Left Behind I agree it is good on paper but does not functionally work.
