First, Please do not go to a Credit Counseling company it is viewed as a bankruptcy without the protection of the bankruptcy court. No company will touch you until you are done paying everyone back. It brings your score down and you will be worse off. If you are late the damage is done. You could wait to let them charge off and the credit card companies will offer you a deal. If you are not late and have not been late you can call them and ask what kind of programs they have for reducing your interest rate. Also dispute items you are unaware of or that are not yours. If your credit is good then try to find a zero interest credit card to transfer the balance to so the interest no longer compounds. It will bring your score down a bit but nothing like a late payment or charge-off/collection/judgment.

There are two ways to look at this issue-- the answer about paying the ones with the high interest rates first, makes good sense and this is where you should put double monthly payments every month when you can afford it, but to help you feel like you are getting ahead faster and to stop the shopping habits-- Start with what I call the stragglers small amount totals that you can pay off quickly do not cancel the cards but lock them up!! Longevity in credit is very important to getting hire scores. This will help you start the no spend trend, and help you realize that this is $$money$$ you can be putting toward something real, solid, like a condo or a home that you really never thought you could afford-- IT REALLY WORKS!! 10 years ago we were in well over our heads and sinking fast the only way out was to learn to be thrifty and work double hard (yes we took 2nd jobs to pay our debts), this was a great deterrent from sending because it was measured in how many extra hours we needed to work to get whatever it was that I could not live without.... good luck

Credit counselors - NO! They are often salespeople who sell fee-based debt management plans for a commission. Some offer debt counseling but you have to be very careful. On the other hand, debt-consolidation is a good bet if all you are doing is replacing multiple loans with a single loan and a lower monthly payment, over a longer period of time. First, get rid of your credit cards. By the time you're in enough trouble to have to consolidate your debt, your credit rating has probably taken a beating anyway.
i'm 36 divorced, remarried--when we met we had 43,000 in the red!!! we paid it off by focusing on paying it off. it took 2 years but we were at 0.00!!! you have no idea what a great feeling it was! it is all about focusing on paying it off!

first and best way is to get rid of the card or cards cut back on your playing around money you can send in payments that are principal only payments on most cards or you can do home equity loan but use the money for what it was intended for other wise you are no better off than when you went to go get the loan. debt consolidation be careful with that can hurt your credit

sit down and make of list of every credit card you have. i the list include amount owed and interest rates. start with paying off your high rate cards and moving towards the lower rate cards. this will help you pay less in interest. also include due dates in your list to help avoid any late payments & late fees. if your late on any or have overlimit fees pay them down so you can avoid more fees and negative points on your credit report. as you pay them off cancel out the ones you really dont need, department store-gas ards-extra credit cards. just keep one or two cards for emergencies only. if your really in debt to the point where you can make the min payment, try debt consolidation

I read about this lady that decided for one year she would only buy the "essentials" food, water, bills, toilet paper, you get the idea, and she was able to payoff all her credit card debt, like $10,000 I think it was, as for your credit rating you should be fine if you have no lates, cards are considered positve trade lines.
