Are ice cubes in China are safe to use?

Why do fast food restaurants most often add way too many ice cubes to beverages?

  • Even if the drink is consumed slowly, there are often an abundance of ice cubes left when the drink is "empty" 1) The customers get "less drink" than advertised 2) the restaurants use more money on cooling (and waste more energy) 3) ice (water) is added to the trash, rather than the drain (unless an ice cube disposal is provided) - Is it cheaper for the restaurants to add more ice (instead of whatever drink), or do people really LIKE all that ice?

  • Answer:

Because they don't have to put in as much act...

It isn't money. Ice doesn't cost a whole lot less than soda. Both cost next to nothing.  People like ice. It's an age old sign of wealth. A lot of ice in your glass gives people a feeling of abundance, which is very desirable for a restaurant. It makes your soda very cold, which makes it taste less sweet. Also keeps it from getting warm for a while, which means less trips to your table for the waitress.  If someone doesn't like ice, they will usually say so. Next time you're at 7-11 or a fast food place where you pour your own soda, watch what people do at the fountain. Usually they'll fill the cup 1/3 to 1/2 with ice.

money. for every cup of drink that they pour, it's acatually only about 70-80% full. say you pay $4 for a cup of coke, but in actual fact you are only getting 75% which is $3. they are saving $1 per cup of drink. if you go and ask for a canned coke at a restaurant, versus an off the tap coke, they would charge you more for the canned coke as you are actually getting what you're paying for.

The other reasons given may be valid, but there is another reason, at least for cocktails: Drop two icecubes in a cocktail, and they will melt and water down your drink. By filling up to three-quarters of the glass with ice, there will be less melting, thus less watering down of your drink.

That's a good question. I don't think they do it to save money or anything though.I don't like a lot of ice either, but every time I put my cup under the ice machine,I always have a full cup of ice and have to dump some out. I think its just a habit and those ice machines push ice out way to fast.

The ice ratio is all about the flavour of your drink. As Niels Las mentioned above, less ice means it melts faster which destroys the flavour profile of the drink. More ice melts slower and gives you a consistent beverage from first sip til last. Guests are quick to point to costs but actually this is not the issue. Restaurants and bars try to give you great quality and as complaints over the cost side have come around the restaurants and bars have reacted by giving bigger glasses. 10oz glasses give way to 16oz, 16oz to 20oz. Still the criticism comes about costs. Bottomless refills come around, then it's criticism that they don't get refilled fast enough. Maybe the solution is to give people what they want and not put ice in the drinks.

It is money.  The added ice is required, and many fast-food restaurants require their managers to enforce the ice rules to increase their soda yield.  You may think it is silly, the profit there is so dramatic anyway, but it is a factual matter I personally can attest to having been privy to internal documents of two different fast food chains that prove it is all about added profit and NOT customer preference to get less soda for their money.  These places have a few cents, always under a quarter, in each glass.  But they multiply those few cents millions of times.
